The Canadian reaction to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s release of its hours-of-service proposal was subdued in most quarters, more than a week after the unveiling caused a commotion throughout this country.

The usually vocal David Bradley, chief executive officer of the Canadian Trucking Alliance, declined to elaborate on his statements in an April 25 press release.

“We need to get a better understanding of how mixed Canada-U.S. operations will be affected. In addition, the rules in Canada will need to reflect the realities of the Canadian transportation network,” he said. “And, while they should be compatible with those in the U.S., they are not likely to be identical.”

Canadians remain guarded in commenting about the 270-page American proposal. Provincial trucking associations were reluctant to share opinions on the reforms. Most declined to speak for the record. But their concern with the proposal’s complexities and the burden they place on drivers showed through.
