As promised, the California Highway Patrol charged into action, sending a strike force to hunt for Mexican trucks operating under illegal leasing agreements with U.S. carriers.

Troopers went on the offensive April 6 and 7, combing the Otay Mesa border-crossing point and two other inland locations for trucks operating illegally. The crackdown comes on the heels of letters CHP sent to Mexican carriers in January that warned of impending action ("California Cracks Down on Mexican Leasing." 4-3, p.1).

The strike force was combing several areas searching for Mexican trucks operating outside of the limits of their Department of Transportation registration. DOT paperwork provided to Mexican carriers, which is supposed to be carried in the truck at all times, clearly delineates their operating range in the United States, said Sgt. Chuck McCrory of the highway patrol’s Commercial Vehicle Section.

Officers concentrated their efforts at Otay Mesa, at the Rainbow Inspection station on Interstate 15 leading out of Otay Mesa and at San Onofre on I-5 coming out of San Diego.
