Arizona Adds Real-Time Truck Parking Info at 4 Stops on I-10

The has incorporated real-time truck parking availability status for Interstate 10 rest areas on its state traveler information website.
“The parking information is now available on the Arizona Traveler Information website, az511.gov. It’s part of the Truck Parking Availability System that launched in January with electronic signs alerting truckers to rest area parking spaces ahead. The goal is helping truckers get the rest they need without having to use places that aren’t designated for truck parking,” ADOT announced recently.
The TPAS project is meant to increase safety for truckers and improve freight flows by providing drivers with real-time information online about how many parking spaces are available at I-10 rest areas in western and southeastern Arizona.
The TPAS information has been implemented at rest areas in Ehrenberg, Bouse Wash, Texas Canyon and San Simon along I-10 and is transmitting information correctly at those four locations, an ADOT spokesperson told Transport Topics.

The system provides such standard information as how many truck parking spots are unoccupied from the total spaces at each rest area. Each rest area listing shows if the facility has restrooms, vending machines and visitor centers as well as the name of the nearest city. Ehrenberg has a total of 31 truck parking spaces, Bouse Wash has 26, Texas Canyon has 44 and San Simon has 34.
Two I-10 truck parking locations called the Burnt Well Rest Area (62 total truck parking spaces) near Tonopah and Sacaton Rest Area (33 slots) lacked data as of May 27 about parking availability for truckers.
“The Burnt Well and Sacaton rest areas aren’t connected to TPAS, so there isn’t any available information to share. Rest areas not connected use ‘no data’ as the default language on az511.gov,” the ADOT spokesperson explained.

The Burnt Well Rest Area at Milepost 86 is some 60 miles west of Phoenix, while the Sacaton Rest Area is 30 miles east of Phoenix between mileposts 181 and 184.
“The parking information is available through a $2.8 million system that serves the eastbound and westbound Ehrenberg and Bouse Wash rest areas between the valley and California and at the Texas Canyon and San Simon rest areas on both directions of I-10 in southeastern Arizona,” according to ADOT.

TPAS is a $13.7 million project, under the , to share information with truckers about availability of 550 parking spots throughout the I-10 freight route spanning from California, Arizona and New Mexico through Texas.
A poll conducted five years ago indicated more than three-fourths of all truckers traveling along I-10 through the Western states had to drive for more than 30 minutes trying to find a place to park. If there is no available parking, truckers can be forced to park in unsafe locations such as on the shoulders of roadways.
Insufficient truck parking spaces remains a top concern throughout the nation. The American Transportation Research Institute notes truckers must use nearly an hour of drive time per day looking for safe parking areas.
