WASHINGTON — In a controversial report calling for huge new spending on the national transportation system, a congressional commission last week made several recommendations that would affect trucking, including new flexibility in the federal driver hours-of-service rule in congestion-prone areas.

The Environmental Protection Agency has completed its draft of new regulations to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions from cars and trucks, Bloomberg reported.

American Trucking Associations welcomed a delegation of Chinese trucking officials to its headquarters in Arlington, Va., Monday, where the two talked about international trucking issues in the two countries.

The commission charged with examining the future of the national transportation system is set to recommend a significant increase in federal fuel taxes to Congress, according to wire service reports and other sources.

Canada’s federal, provincial and territorial governments are jointly studying the idea of requiring speed limiters on heavy-duty trucks, the Associated Press reported. The governors would prevent the truck from exceeding about 65 mph.

Surface trade among the United States, Canada and Mexico was 3.9% higher in June than a year earlier, though truck trade declined, the Department of Transportation said Thursday.

The Federal Reserve gave a generally positive assessment of the U.S. economy last week as manufacturing and job growth picked up, but the Fed’s report cited some regional slowdowns in trucking and truck manufacturing.

The Transportation Department said Monday it has published additional details on safety standards and inspection program in place for its cross-border trucking demonstration program.
