We’re thankful that the Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Transportation has agreed to audit the federal government’s new Compliance, Safety, Accountability program.

American Trucking Associations has filed suit against the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s latest attempt to modify the hours-of-service rule because it believes it had no other way to prevent a serious mistake on the part of the very agency that is charged with improving safety by and for the motor carrier industry.

Yes, American Trucking Associations is a staunch supporter of the federal mandate requiring electronic logging devices to monitor hours-of-service compliance for the nation’s truck drivers.

Highway safety is one of the trucking industry’s top priorities, and we have long supported the industry’s efforts to employ technology in enhancing the safety of our employees’ workplace and the safety of everyone who shares our nation’s highways.

After carefully weighing the pros and cons in the sometimes overheated debate over whether the federal government should mandate electronic logging devices in heavy-duty trucks, we unequivocally support a requirement for electronic logging to monitor hours-of-service compliance.

Once again, fuel prices are in the worrisome range, just as most of us are beginning to accept that the recession is really over and better times are ahead.

Isn’t it always this way? The good news is, there’s plenty of freight for the trucking industry to haul, and strong signs that growth will continue.
