WASHINGTON — In conjunction with DHL Worldwide Express, the U.S. Postal Service is now offering merchandise delivery to 213 nations through its new Global Express Guaranteed Service.
The DHL-Postal Service venture started in April 1999 as Priority Mail Global Guaranteed, and moved documents only. At a press conference here Oct. 2, postal officials said they had to rework the service because of declining volume for shipping documents spurred by competition from electronic-mail and e-commerce.
“International expedited volumes for documents were going down in chunks,” said Gerald McKiernan of the Postal Service.
The business partnership is based on the merging of the strengths of the two organizations. USPS brings with it 20,000 retail outlets across the United States, or about 53% of the nation’s 38,000 post offices. In comparison, DHL has 286 U.S. service centers.
