USPS Proposes Price Hike for Parcel Packages, Stamps
The sticker price of parcel packages and first-class stamps will rise if the U.S. Postal Service has its way.
Prices for packages weighing more than one pound would increase 9.3%.
A proposed 5-cent increase from 50 to 55 cents for a traditional stamp would be the largest incremental hike since 1991.
Rate hikes across the board are also coming if approved: lightweight packages 12.3%, return service 6.8%, first-class package service 12.3%, commercial 11.9% and retail 13.3%.
The increases come after criticism by President Donald Trump and continual fiscal troubles for the USPS. Changes are proposed to take effect Jan. 27, 2019.
A comment period is open on the Postal Regulatory Commission’s website until Oct. 25, 2018. The notice has also been made available at www.prc.gov.
