he federal government said full-scale testing of trailer-tracking technologies aimed at preventing hazardous material shipments from falling into the hands of terrorists will begin in late August.

Joseph DeLorenzo, a hazardous material specialist at the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, said the testing would conclude in late 2004 with possible recommendations on how to identify which containers, drums and tankers need to be monitored out of 800,000 daily hazmat shipments.

“There is no magic bullet right now that would do all of this, all of the time,” said DeLorenzo in a July 8 interview with Transport Topics. “With the exception of the Department of Energy that looks at shipments of radioactive material and the Department of Defense for munitions shipments, the Department of Transportation does not have in place any regulation that governs tracking the majority of hazardous material shipments.”
