PS Inc. said late Monday it will begin a $25 million expansion of its air package hub in near Chicago later this month that will increase sorting capacity there by about 50%.

The project — approved after consultation with the state and the city of Rockford, Ill. — will not expand the hub building at the Chicago/Rockford International Airport, but will outfit the interior with new sorting equipment, UPS said.

The facility’s sorting capability will rise to 121,000 from 82,000 packages per hour, and create about 100 new jobs in two years and 200 in the next three years. Currently, UPS employs 1,450 people in Rockford.

The project is scheduled to be completed by November before the holiday shipping season, the company said.

UPS is ranked No. 1 on the Transport Topics 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
