he Transportation Security Administration announced April 1 that it was delaying implementation until 2005 of its regulation that would have required fingerprint-based background checks of hazardous materials drivers this year.

In a notice posted on the Department of Transportation’s docket management Web site, TSA said it was amending its previously published rule and “changing the date on which fingerprint-based background checks must begin in all states to Jan. 31, 2005.â€

Under its previous regulation, TSA had said state driver licensing authorities were to begin implementing the checks by April 1 or request a waiver to wait until December.
