Trump to Ease Regulations With Three Executive Orders

President Donald Trump is expected to sign a trio of new executive actions on May 9 designed to reduce the impact of regulations — part of an effort the White House has said will inspire economic growth.
Trump is slated to sign an executive order mandating that the government create a list of possible regulatory violations that could prompt criminal offenses, as well as the range of criminal penalties that individuals face for running afoul of the federal rules.
The intent, according to a White House fact sheet seen by Bloomberg, is to discourage criminal prosecution of regulations that Americans don’t know about or are running afoul of accidentally.
Trump is also signing a proclamation restoring commercial fishing access to thousands of square miles off the coast of New England. The Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument was blocked from fishing during the Obama and Biden administrations, but Trump has argued the environmental protections are unnecessary.
The change should benefit Maine lobstermen, who Trump has complained are unfairly disadvantaged compared with their Canadian counterparts.
Trump also plans to sign another memo focused on water pressure and efficiency rules, part of his longstanding effort to address low-flow showerheads, faucets and toilets. Trump has argued efforts to cut water waste have reduced their efficacy.
The memo also asks agencies to work with the White House’s legislative affairs office to consider whether to pursue the repeal or revision of the Energy Policy Act of 1992, a George H.W. Bush-era law designed to promote renewable energy.
