FCC Widens Radio Spectrum for Wireless Networks
The FCC declared on Thursday it is lessening restrictions on companies using the 2.4 gigahertz band. The band is used by firms that create wireless local area networks, or LANs. The networks allow users to send data transmissions to various computer-type devices via wireless technology.Supporters of easing the restrictions hope the FCC's decision will lead to increased availability of wireless products, such as those offering streamlining video and digital music. The ºÚÁϳԹÏÍøRF Working Group, which includes Compaq and Intel, has actively campaigned to get the FCC to ease the restrictions. The decision will also increase the speed of frequency hopping by allowing signals to be sent across more channels. New York Times (09/01/00) P. C2; Guernsey, Lisa
