    CeBIT-Hewlett-Packard Launches New Handheld Devices

Hewlett-Packard has introduced its new Jornada handheld computer.

The new model comes with a color screen and uses Microsoft's Pocket PC software.

The new handheld also has software for Web access via a mobile phone. The software allows users to read and write wireless e-mails.

While IDC Research says handheld computer shipments will expand to 14.9 million units this year, that figure is well below the 450 million to 500 million units expected to be shipped by the cell phone industry this year.

To increase their overall market presence, many handheld computer makers are entering the mobile phone market. For instance, HP has formed an alliance with an unnamed cell phone manufacturer to develop a handheld computer that offers cell phone and wireless e-mail capabilities without connecting to a mobile phone. Siemens Doubles Transmission Speed With New Mobile Phone

Siemens, Europe's third largest cell phone company, has launched its new GPRS (general packet radio service) cell phone.

The phone can transmit data and voice at up to 40 kilobits, twice as fast as a typical cell phone. The phone also offers high-speed Web access. Until now, Motorola had been the only company offering GPRS phones.

GPRS, also called 2.5G, bridges the gap between today's technology and future 3G (third-generation) systems. GPRS transmits signals in small bundles, unlike current wireless phones that transmit in one continuous signal. This new transmission technique enables GPRS signals to find the fastest route to their destination.

    Wireless Wonders

Wireless technology is poised to transform how sales are conducted.

According to Jay Highley, vice president of Sprint PCS' Business Customer Unit, the same content offered by laptop computers can be viewed on cell phones. And Phone.com's senior vice president, Ben Linder, predicts that wireless technology will give consumers purchasing power from any location.

Wireless technology will likely be used primarily for impulse buying and as a tool for consumers to attain more information on products. Some salespeople are already focusing on how to apply wireless technology to their particular field. Selling Power (03/01)
