When the Oklahoma Legislature opens its 2001 session on Feb. 5, it will take up several proposals of interest to trucking, including setting up a single agency for handling permits and licensing and expanding the use of overload permits.

A third measure could repeal tolls on Oklahoma’s turnpikes – nearly three decades from now.

The first bill would create a Department of Motor Carriers — a “one-stop shop” for items such as permits, single-state registrations and intrastate carrier licensing. The transportation division of the Oklahoma Corporation Commission — except the railroad section — and the Motor Vehicle Enforcement Section of the Oklahoma Tax Commission would be abolished and their duties transferred to the new department.

That bill would also create a seven-member Oklahoma Motor Carriers Commission, which would select the director of the Department of Motor Carriers and oversee rulemaking and budget requests for that agency.
