WASHINGTON — Trucking industry leaders urged the government to embrace security measures that freight transportation companies are already employing, and pressed their case for tougher screening of employees through access to a federal database on criminal records.

The trucking executives, at a high-profile cargo security conference here, called for applying best security practices across the broad transportation sector and avoiding rules that might needlessly interrupt the flow of goods.

In the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks using hijacked passenger planes, most federal security efforts have focused on aviation, ocean ports and border traffic, rather than domestic freight shipments.
