Truck Makers Say Early 2007 Engines May Not Require ULSD

lthough truck manufacturers would begin selling 2007 model-year trucks at various times during 2006, they said the only trucks that would be required to use government-mandated ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel would be those sold after Dec. 31, 2006.
“It is possible for a model-year 2007 truck to come equipped with an engine built in 2006. It is all a matter of timing,” Roy Wiley, spokesman for International Truck and Engine, told Transport Topics.
The different engines in otherwise similar trucks could complicate maintenance for fleets, said Michael Jeffress, vice president of maintenance at flatbed carrier Maverick Transportation, who was a former chairman of the Technology & Maintenance Council.
