A plan for "truck freeways" on interstate highways that would allow heavier, longer trucks, but would keep them apart from cars, has drawn a measure of qualified support from the American Trucking Associations.

The plan, unveiled at a Washington D.C. press conference Thursday, is the work of the Reason Public Policy Institute, a West Coast free-market think-tank.

However, the Los Angeles Times said House Transportation Committee Chairman Don Young (R-Alaska) has said it could reduce the number of deaths from crashes between cars and trucks while also benefiting the industry.

ATA President William Canary said the RPPI report incorporates many of the elements necessary for a safe and economically viable truck-lane proposal.
