The Senate’s version of legislation to establish a motor carrier safety agency, once thought dead for this congressional session, is showing signs of life.

Lobbying to get the bill to the Senate floor moved into high gear last week when interested parties learned there was still a chance of shepherding the measure through this year.

On Oct. 29, Transportation Secretary Rodney E. Slater wrote Sen. John McCain, chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee and sponsor of the Motor Carrier Safety Improvement Act of 1999, urging “early legislative action” on the bill.

McCain, an Arizona Republican and presidential candidate, has reportedly been working to round up support among his colleagues.
