As technologies are moving forward in fleet maintenance, it’s important to keep pace with the latest advancements. However, as industry leaders suggest, it is just as vital to get a refresher on fundamental skills and practices.
Getting back to basics is one of the pillars of the ’s theme, “Advancing Technology through Industry Engagement.”
The transportation technology exhibition will take place in Nashville, Tenn., on March 10-13.
TMC Executive Director Robert Braswell said the council’s focus is the development of voluntary industry standards, known as recommended practices or RPs.

“The educational benefit that comes out of this process [of developing RPs] improves the state of equipment, its maintenance and management,” he said. Braswell added that the event at Music City Center will include two educational tracks — advanced technology and back to basics.
“[Attendees] don’t have to pick one or the other. You can go back and forth however you want,” Braswell explained. “The idea is that we wanted to give a little bit of far-reaching, far-horizons content for those that really want to eat that kind of thing up.”

TMC Chairman and General Treasurer Amanda Schuier said this dual approach caters to the foundational learning needs of newer managers and the thirst for cutting-edge innovations among veteran members.
“It’s this balance that will help us tackle both current operations and future advancements in the field,” said Schuier, who also is director of employee engagement for Jetco Delivery.
One of the technical sessions she mentioned, “Effective Strategies for Presenting Maintenance Perspectives to the C-Suite,” focuses on communication between fleet maintenance managers and executive leadership.
“This session came from a TMC member who’s in the leadership program,” Schuier said. “Sometimes, he’s talking shop to the CFO, and it’s like they’re talking two different languages.”

“I think it’s just going to be a really neat session,” Schuier said. “This is looking at it in a different way than we have before.”
She added that this year’s edition of “Shop Talk” will cover ideas concerning the next-generation tractor-trailer connector and interface.

“Usually, we have open-ended questions,” Schuier said, adding that it would be an opportunity to gather information from fleets on what they want to gain from the new technology.
Schuier and Braswell noted that anticipation has been increasing for the Annual Meeting. Braswell recalled how fast the council bounced back from the 2020 virtual Fall Meeting during COVID to hosting the 2021 Fall Meeting in-person in Cleveland.
He attributed the rise in participation to the unique nature of TMC.
“It’s not just a trade show. It is an industry event that combines the development of industry standards,” Braswell said. “It is primarily noncommercial, which is unusual in the industry.”

He explained that a noncommercial focus brings in attendees who are seeking technical analysis as opposed to marketing and sales.
“When you’re going by the booths or talking to the people with the yellow badges of the fleets, they’re the technical experts talking to other technical experts,” he said. “In the associate side, they’re talking to the OEM engineers and the other Tier One suppliers. There is a lot of cross-pollination between technical experts at our meeting. I think that really is what is the draw for TMC.”

Mihai
Schuier said the council is expecting record attendance this year. In addition to the more than 100 task force sessions, networking socials and annual banquet, the changing of the guard for council chairman is one of the main attractions of the Annual Meeting.
Schuier will be succeeded by headquartered in Calgary, Alberta. Mihai, who currently serves as board of directors, chairman of meetings, will be the first Canadian chairman.
“His intelligence, humor, and relatable experiences ensure that he will do a tremendous job steering TMC into its next chapter,” Schuier said. “Without giving too much away, his theme aligns perfectly with what I’ve aimed for in terms of engagement and accessibility.”
