CHICAGO — Truckers and shippers last week crafted a tentative solution to a disagreement that has stalled approval of a code of ethics on treatment of truck drivers.

Finalization of the three-page ethics guide has been held up by five words in a provision that asks carriers to clearly communicate the rates and terms of service — including any limitations on cargo liability “in response to shipper requests” ("Shipper-Carrier Code Stalls on Language," 6-26, p. 5).

To resolve the disagreement, the Truckload Carriers Association and an official of the National Industrial Transportation League agreed to cut the wording about shipper requests and re-title the document a code of ethics for shippers, receivers, contract carriers and drivers, thus avoiding any conflict with less-than-truckload carriers.

The changes must still be approved by NITL and other trucking interests.
