Truckers Seeking Out Wireless Internet Technology
Wireless Internet is becoming as vital a communications tool for truck driver as CB radio because it allows them to stay in closer touch with home and to entertain themselves, the Associated Press reported.Wi-Fi, short for wireless fidelity, lets computer users within a few hundred feet share a high-speed Internet connection. Several truckers told AP they are willing to travel longer distance to reach a truck stop equipped with wireless Internet access.
To make wireless Internet work, truck stops install antennas that serve as "access points" on building roofs. All truckers need are Wi-Fi-capable computers.
XM's Net Loss Widens in 1Q
XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc. said Thursday its net loss for the first quarter was $172.4 million or 96 cents a share, compared with a loss of $124 million or $1.26 a year earlier.The company said in a statement the latest results included higher costs related to subscriber growth and a noncash deferred tax charge of $25.6 million.
Revenue for the quarter increased to $43 million from $13.1 million. The company added 321,675 net subscribers to end the quarter with 1.68 million subscribers.
XM, like its smaller rival Sirius Satellite Radio Inc., considers the addition of its radios into new trucks and cars by manufacturers as a key growth area, Reuters reported. Transport Topics
Stonepath Reports Net Loss Despite Revenue Growth
Logistics service provider Stonepath Group Inc. said Thursday its net loss for the first quarter was $785,000 or 2 cents per share, compared with a loss of $7,300 or less than 1 cent per share a year earlier.Stonepath's revenue was $60.5 million, up from $38.6 million in the first quarter of 2003, the company said in a release.
On May 3, the company warned it would post a loss after it originally predicted it would post a profit for the quarter. It blamed increased costs, particularly those related to its obligations as a publicly traded company under new federal law, for the lower guidance. Transport Topics
Minorplanet to Remain Conditionally Listed on Nasdaq
Minorplanet Systems USA Inc., a provider of wireless management systems for commercial fleets, said Wednesday it was informed it would remain conditionally listed on the Nasdaq SmallCap market.But in order to remain listed, Minorplanet said it must meet several requirements including submitting documentation that a hearing before a bankruptcy court for the approval of the company's disclosure statement was held.
The Nasdaq Listing Qualifications Panel also gave the company a 180-day grace period to achieve compliance with the $1 minimum bid price requirement.
The trading symbol for the company's securities was changed to MNPQC from MNPLQ to indicate the conditional listing, the company said. Transport Topics
