Connecticut Delays Weigh Station Bypass System
Connecticut will delay the implementation of technology that would allow trucks with established safety records to bypass the Greenwich weigh station on Interstate 95, reported The Advocate newspaper.State Department of Transportation officials had hoped that installing the North American Preclearance Safety System, or NORPASS, at the Greenwich station would reduce lines at the scale house that routinely spill onto Interstate 95 and cause traffic jams, the Advocate said.
NORPASS uses motion-sensor technology and cab-mounted transponder tags to determine, based on a driver’s safety record, whether a truck may bypass a weigh station, the Advocate reported.
As a registered driver approaches a weigh station equipped with the NORPASS technology, a light will flash green to indicate that the driver is clear to pass, or red to indicate that the driver must pull into the station for inspection. Transport Topics
