A former judge in New Mexico has been appointed special counsel for the Teamsters union’s new anti-corruption campaign.

Harris L. Hartz resigned from the state Appeals Court to take the job. He will join the law firm of Stier, Anderson & Malone to aid in the union’s effort to rid itself of corruption and organized crime influence.

The Teamsters recently announced an anti-corruption plan to be led by former U.S. Attorney Edwin Stier, who has been credited with cleaning up one of the most notoriously corrupt Teamsters unions, Local 560 in Union City, N.J.

The plan aims to:

• Establish standards of conduct for union members; educate officers and members on the standards;
• Establish internal procedures to guarantee effective enforcement of the standards.
• Identify and remove any remaining organized crime influence in the union.
