Study Says Central Hazmat Database Could Raise New Security Concerns
Although it is technologically possible to track hazmat shipments and monitor whether they deviate from pre-planned routes, the report said the information would be useful only if authorities had enough time to react. The report also said false alarms would “create problems and waste resources.”
“A quick and easy ability to identify the contents of hazardous materials transportation vehicles is essential for safety reasons . . . however, easy identification of hazardous materials may present concerns from a security standpoint,” the study said.
