States Respond to ATA Concern of Price Gouging at Fueling Stations

A week after the Sept. 11 terrorists attacks, Canary stated in his letter that the trucking industry was “more than willing” to do its part to keep the nation’s economy moving. But he warned that the industry could be “held hostage to outrageous fuel costs” that would hinder its ability to carry out its work.Citing “unjustified spikes” in the price of diesel and other motor fuels after the attacks, he asked the attorney general of each state to devote resources to enforcing laws to protect consumers from price gouging and make the public aware of laws that are on the books. In instances where there were no current laws, he urged the attorneys general to use consumer protection provisions to combat the practice.
