States Attempt to Ease Pain of Fuel Price Pinch

State legislators are trying to ease the pain of high diesel and gasoline costs by removing state taxes from the fuel price equation.

A groundswell of truckers have been asking for some relief from record high fuel prices for months and now that gas prices have caught up car drivers have added their voices to the chorus ("Diesel Hits Record High as Crude, Gasoline Surge," 3-13, p. 1).

The statehouses of Illinois, Maine, New York and Oklahoma are among those across the country ringing with talk of cutting state fuel taxes.

The Illinois Senate unanimously voted March 8 to eliminate the state’s 6.25% fuel sales tax.
