Shippers Holding Tight As Port Talks Pause

A containership ties up at the Port of Seattle.

Shippers’ groups said their members were not making major shifts in cargo routing, even though longshoremen put on hold their contract talks with West Coast port terminal operators until Aug. 13 and the union gave its negotiators power to seek a strike vote by members.

“Some might be more concerned now, but folks that had contingency plans in place already carried them out,” said Jonathon Gold, director of international trade policy for the International Mass Retail Association.

The International Longshore and Warehouse Union and the Pacific Maritime Association, which represents port terminal operators, have been renewing the old contract daily since it expired July 1.
