he Senate is expected to approve a $295 billion highway bill over objections of the Bush administration, which wants a lower funding level, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday.
Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) told the Journal that the Senate may test President Bush’s threat to veto the legislation.
The Senate late Wednesday had approved a measure boosting the bill’s spending level to $295 billion, $11 billion over the $284 billion approved by the House in March. (Click here for previous coverage.)
The extra $11 billion would be paid for by 28 revenue offsets added by Senators, the Journal said.
The Senate bill would have to be reconciled with a $283.9 billion House measure passed in March that was in line with White House budget numbers. (Click here for previous coverage.)
