Senate Approves One-Month Highway Bill Extension

ollowing the House's action late Wednesday, the Senate Thursday approved a one-month extension of the existing federal highway bill, which is scheduled to expire May 31, the Associated Press reported.

As did the House, the Senate passed the extension by a voice vote.

Both bodies have passed bills for a new, six-year highway bill, but the two measures are about $11 billion apart, with the Senate's higher, at $295 billion.

President Bush still needs to sign the measure. He has threatened to veto anything over the House's $283.9 billion spending level.

In a report issued Thursday, Federal Highway Administrator Mary Peters said "Congress is long overdue in passing the president's plan to invest record sums to improve our highways and transit systems."
