alifornia Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) signed a measure Tuesday that puts a $20 billion transportation bond on the state’s November ballot, the Associated Press reported.

Schwarzenegger said if voters approved the bond measure, it will help relieve traffic congestion on California's roads, augment mass transit and rail systems and improve air quality around ports, AP reported.

State Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata (D), who authored the legislation, and state Senate Republican Leader Dick Ackerman joined Schwarzenegger at a news conference announcing their support of the bill, AP said.

Schwarzenegger said the bond measure is the largest infrastructure project in California's history, and Perata said the bond plan was “long overdue,” AP reported.

The $20 billion transportation portion of the bond is part of a larger $37.5 billion overall bond, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
