Schneider Expands Its Glass Hauling Business
Metler, based in Knoxville, Tenn., operates 235 tractors and 335 specialized trailers. It also employs about 300 drivers, mechanics and office workers in its glass hauling business, which will become part of Schneider in April.
Metler President Anthony Metler said he will continue to operate a 30-tractor fleet specializing in hauling hazardous waste, steel, aluminum and building materials.
A dry van truckload division consisting of 60 power units and with annual revenue of about $8 million will be sold to an unidentified third party, he said.
Founded in 1933, Metler devised a special racking system that allowed the company to haul uncrated flat glass in drop deck trailers from production facilities to distribution centers, window manufacturing plants and storefront locations. The company operated mainly east of the Rocky Mountains and did a lot of business in Mexico and Canada.
