Sandberg Says FMCSA Will Trim Rules Backlog
he Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration said it plans to release about 17 new regulations this year, making a significant dent in a several-year-long backlog of outstanding rules that had drawn criticism from Congress and safety groups.
In a wide-ranging interview with Transport Topics reporters and editors, FMCSA Administrator Annette Sandberg also discussed enforcement of hours-of-service regulations, explored possible use of data recorders in trucks and said the agency was researching ways to safely disable trucks that may have been hijacked.
Sandberg said that while her agency wants to move quickly on regulations Congress has required, FMCSA also does not want to overwhelm the trucking industry with a sudden deluge of new rules.
