Rail Group President Sees Intermodal Passing Coal as Top Revenue Producer
img src="/sites/default/files/images/articles/printeditiontag_new.gif" width=120 align=right>WASHINGTON — Intermodal freight hauls should replace coal as the top revenue generator for the nation's largest railroads by the first quarter of 2004, said a top rail industry executive.
Edward R. Hamberger, chief executive officer of the Association of American Railroads, made the prediction Jan. 10 at the "Transportation Table," a Washington forum for industry issues.
He said the Class I rail industry's intermodal segment grew 4.6% in 2002, while carloadings of more traditional rail cargoes of bulk materials declined about 1%.
