SAN DIEGO — Concern about distracting drivers with too much information and a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration effort to evaluate use of accident-data recorders in trucks drew interest but no policy decisions from the Technology and Engineering Policy Committee of American Trucking Associations.

Kevin Holland, the policy committee’s director, said members would decide during a meeting in February whether to stake out a position on the two issues.

How technology relates to driver distraction is a complex problem, Holland said. Many things unrelated to technology can distract drivers. At the same time, the advent of so many new technologies intended to improve safety and to entertain and communicate with drivers creates a potential for information overload.

Holland said ATA’s position has always been that drivers should concentrate on the road, “and if they need to do something else, you pull off the road.”
