Overnite, Teamsters Reports Differ Over Effect of Strike

Observers noted that the credibility of the Teamsters and their president, James P. Hoffa, is resting on the union’s success in organizing Overnite’s terminal workers.
Union officials estimated that by Oct. 27, 3,000 Overnite workers and 6,000 supporters from unionized trucking companies were picketing 126 of the carrier’s 166 terminals across the country. An Overnite spokesman said the number of employees who stayed home from work last week was hovering around 550.
