Overnite Transportation and the Teamsters union scheduled five days of negotiating sessions in the next month, even after both sides reported no progress in two days of meetings last week.

Company and union representatives said the sides discussed pension and employee benefits during negotiations March 7 and 8 in Washington, D.C. But aside from each side insinuating that the other was about to crack, no end to the impasse was in sight.

In a report to union members, the Washington-based Teamsters claimed that Overnite showed “a change in attitude,” but when pressed, Teamsters spokesman David Cameron would not say what impact that change had on negotiations. Nor could he attribute the perceived attitude change to any specific cause.

Ira Rosenfeld, a spokesman for the Richmond, Va.-based less-than-truckload carrier, dismissed the Teamsters’ claims, saying “our attitude has not changed at all.”
