President ObamaÌýsigned the three-month extension of funding for federal highways measures July 31, but criticized Congress for failing to agree on a longer-term solution.Ìý
"It's a bad way for the U.S. government to do business," Obama said of the uncertainty states and municipalities face in the absence ofÌýlong-range funding. He said his message for Congress is:Ìý"We should not be leaving all of the business of the U.S. government to the last minute."Ìý
The $8 billion extensionÌýObama signed extends infrastructure spending to Oct. 29.
On July 30 the Senate passed both the three-month House-approved extension and a six-year plan, but the House had made it known earlier in the week that it planned to recess for the summer and wasn't sticking around to consider the Senate's six-year plan.
