New York’s ton-mile tax will not go away this legislative session, but truckers will see a $10 million a year drop.

The New York State Motor Truck Association was pushing to replace the tax with a 100% registration fee increase (3-20, p. 5). An 80,000-pound truck currently pays 4.95 cents a mile.

But the registration fee hike would have raised just half of the revenue lost from getting rid of the ton-mile tax, and state lawmakers could not fit such a large reduction in funds into the budget.

Instead, lawmakers officially agreed May 4 to cut the tax a half cent across the board. This means that same truck would pay 4.45 cents a mile under the new rates.
