ransmission makers say their components are tougher than ever, but still depend upon the mercy of drivers and technicians to reduce the severity of any problems that crop up.
Whether state-of-the-art automated models or classic manuals, the manufacturers stress the need for maintenance and care of the shifting mechanisms. And they say new designs have quieted tractor cabs, which allow drivers to hear potential problems sooner.
At the same time, the manufacturers have tried to reduce transmission problems by using extended-life synthetic fluids, forced lubrication and higher grades of steel.
