The New Jersey Turnpike is finally ready to launch its new electronic toll-payment system, and the toll increases that will accompany it.
The E-ZPass system will become active on the turnpike the morning of Sept. 30. The system will allow vehicles with windshield-mounted transponders to roll past toll booths without stopping, while the toll is automatically deducting from the driver’s pre-established account.
The New Jersey Turnpike Authority is using the introduction of the system as an opportunity to raise tolls for everyone.
Truck drivers paying cash will see a 13% increase on Sept. 30. Another 13% increase will take effect in 2003.
