What would have been just another bridge reconstruction in Newark took on greater significance as New Jersey embarked on the first project of its $1 billion-plus Portway project.

State officials hope the Portway construction project helps improve the flow of freight from the Port of Newark/Elizabeth in New Jersey.
The New Jersey Department of Transportation broke ground for the $31-million Doremus Avenue bridge replacement outside the Port of Newark.
The bridge, built in 1918, is located northeast of Newark Airport and carries traffic over a rail yard to the city’s Ironbound district.
Reconstruction is expected to last until 2003. When it is completed, sensors in the bridge will monitor conditions and provide a steady stream of data on how the span responds to heavy loads and weather.
