.S. new home sales rose 2.1% in September, turning around a decline the previous month, the Commerce Department reported Thursday.

The increase brought new sales to a 1.222 million annual rate from a revised August level of 1.197 million, which had been the lowest since January.

The rate was lower than the 1.25 million rate that economists had forecast, Bloomberg reported.

New home sales rose 24.6% in the Midwest and 5.6% in the South, and fell 20% in the Northeast and 11.8% in the West.
