The North Carolina Department of Labor faces substantial hurdles in imposing its ergonomics standard.

The department’s latest proposal is being considered by a state commission established by the legislature to review new regulations.

Steve Tuttle, vice president of communications for the North Carolina Citizens for Business and Industry, said the commission rejected an earlier version of the proposed rule, citing a provision of the state budget that bars the Department of Labor from spending money to enact an ergonomics standard.

If the standard gets past the rules commission, it must pass a review by the General Assembly.
