Maryland put the final touches on its 2000 legislative session April 10 and six bills pertaining to trucking were passed in the final flurry of action.

All of the legislation must still be approved by Gov. Parris N. Glendening, a Democrat.

Senate Bill 45 makes it illegal to remove a federal transponder registered to one truck and put it on another. Offenders face a fine of up to $500 and loss of their commercial driver licenses.

Maryland is one of several states participating in the Commercial Vehicle Information Systems and Network pilot projects to clear incoming commercial trucks with a minimum of fuss. As part of the program, motor carriers can use a transponder to bypass a weigh station.
