Ricardo Martinez, administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, is leaving his post to return to his medical career as a senior executive at an Internet-based health care company in Atlanta.

Before joining NHTSA in 1994, he served as associate director of the Center for Injury Control at the Emory University School of Public Health and an associate professor with Emory’s School of Medicine.

Transportation Secretary Slater announced Martinez’s resignation on Sept. 30.

“Ric Martinez has made a difference,” said Slater. “His approach as a physician and a recognized expert on crash injuries has changed NHTSA, and the way industry and the public deal with motor vehicle safety.”
