evised truck tonnage rates released Wednesday by American Trucking Associations showed a 0.2% drop in March, less than a preliminary 3.3% decline reported April 27.

ATA’s seasonally adjusted Truck Tonnage Index fell to 115.3, its second straight decline and the third in four months.

“Our projected growth for this year will translate into solid expansion for the industry,” ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello said when the preliminary numbers were released in April.

There was more evidence in March that industrial output is still growing at a reasonable rate but has slowed in recent months, ATA said.

Year-over-year the adjusted index improved 2.9% in March. The index rose 5.4% in 2004, ATA said.

ATA calculates the tonnage index based on surveys from its membership. The index compares activity to a 1993 base year and is derived by sampling companies in all types of freight-hauling operations.
