Maker of Truck Cabs, Bodies to Close in May

A company that makes trucks cabs and vehicle bodies for customers including Volvo and Mack, said it will close in May, eliminating 310 jobs.

Formerly known as American Commercial Vehicles, it was recently purchased by Wayne Stamping and Assembly, a subsidiary of Mayflower Vehicle Systems.

The company is located in Orrville, Ohio, about 20 miles southwest of Akron. It said in a statement it has been in financial trouble for a while and was put up for sale several months ago.

However, no one has expressed an interest in purchasing the company, and it was further negatively impacted by the slowdown in sales in the large-truck industry.

The company is a manufacturer of medium-, heavy-duty and commercial vehicle cab assemblies, as well as niche-market vehicle bodies. It has supplied the truck and automotive markets for more than 40 years.

Mayflower plans to absorb the work into its other facilities, where it said hundreds of employees have been on long-term layoff.

Mayflower said last week it had received a contract from Volvo Truck of North America worth $65 million to make truck cabs.
