Landstar Systems said Wednesday it would split the titles of chairman and chief executive officer and appointed current company president and chief operating officer, Henry Gerkens, to the position of CEO.

The Jacksonville, Fla.-based company said Jeffrey Crowe, who had been Chairman and CEO, would remain as chairman of Landstar’s board.

The change will go into effect on July 1, the company said.

A company spokesman said Landstar believed separating the roles would improve its management structure.

Landstar ranked No. 15 on the 2003 Transport Topics 100 listing of the largest trucking companies in the United States and Canada.
