Inventor Sees Fuel Savings With New Diesel Truck Engine

Dimitrios Dardalis thinks he has a design that will enable producers to wring greater fuel efficiency from diesel engines while greatly reducing overhaul requirements.

Dardalis, a mechanical engineering doctoral candidate at the University of Texas at Austin, patented a wear-reducing concept that involves the use of rotating cylinder bore liners to reduce boundary friction during the combustion cycle. He claims that by doing so, it is possible to achieve fuel savings of 4.5% to 5.5%.

“I got the idea from engine designs the British used for the Hawker Typhoon and Tempest and the Bristol Beaufighter World War II combat aircraft,” Dardalis said. “They were amazing engines in terms of performance.”
