nternational Truck and Engine Corp. gave an industry briefing Tuesday at which it said it was conducting the largest field test in its history to help achieve looming 2007 emissions standards.

Dee Kapur, president of the International’s truck group, said the plan was to ensure that "our customers can make informed decisions about their business" with 2007 approaching and customers already scheduling orders in the third and fourth quarters.

"We are supporting incentives to mitigate these price increases through our work with the American Trucking Associations," said Patrick Charbonneau, vice president, government relations.

"The ATA is engaged in discussions with a number of elected officials to give customers a 5% tax credit on Class 8 trucks containing the new engines,” he said.

Based on current tests, fuel economy degradation currently is estimated beyond the 1% expected through the use of ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel, and the company is working to maximize fuel economy to close that gap, said Phil Christman, International's vice president, product creation.
